S. Hernsheim & Brothers was founded in 1857 by oldest brother and New Orleans native, Simon Hernsheim. Initially the business supplied tobacco leaves to the European market, but when the above receipt was written in 1882, the company had become the second largest manufacturer of tobacco products in the States. Their most popular cigar was the La Belle Creole followed by the Jackson Square and the El Belmont. They also sold period cigarette favorites such as King Bee and Home Run. Henry O’Kelly kept a wholesale account with the company and when in New Orleans, he was several times invited to Simon’s home which is now known as the Columns Hotel on St. Charles Avenue.
